Summer Season Newsletter

As summer comes to an end, we take a moment to look back on the accomplishments and commitments we made to wrestling in the off-season. The Technique, Tradition, and Competition during the summer months will help each individual reach their personal goals.

Technique
During the summer, we are able to focus more on adding new technique to our repertoire. The off-season is a perfect time because most of us do not have competition coming up and we are more able to focus on the small details that can take our technique to the next level. This summer we focused on top wrestling. The first 6 weeks we implemented the Spiral Claw Series while the second 6 weeks was completely devoted to learning how to ride and turn with Legs. As a coach I was completely impressed with how quickly the members picked up the technique. While we have worked on the Spiral Claw Series in the past, the Legs were completely new to most of the wrestlers yet this did not slow the pace at all. With this new technique added in, I expect the Summer Season wrestlers to be feared on top come competition time.

Tradition
Summer is the most difficult time, I feel, for high school and middle school wrestlers to stay committed. It shows a great deal about the dedication of the wrestlers who put in practice time 3 days a week during the summer months. While most kids are sitting at their neighborhood pool, the Humphrey Wrestling members were busy working and improving to help reach their personal goals. As a coach I was pleased to see the daily hard work from each member throughout the summer.

Competition
While most tournaments are in the fall, we did have a few wrestlers compete during the summer. The Hamilton Southeastern Wrestling team took a trip down to the Disney Duals and posted a 5-7 record with a very young team full of incoming freshmen and sophomores. The match experience will show great dividends during winter wrestling. On the national scene, Patrick Robinson went 5-3 at the Junior National Duals in Oklahoma City. The competition was stiff but Pat managed to win most of his matches, helping Team Indiana in their duals meets. Most impressive, however, was Tommy Cash who went 11-0 at the Schoolboy National Duals. Tommy amazingly was only scored on in 2 matches on his way to an undefeated record for the weekend, the best on Team Indiana. All in all, the wrestlers who competed during the summer improved greatly and gained much needed experience for the upcoming season.

I look forward to seeing how everyone does this upcoming regular season. I take great pride in the coaching I do with every member and team. I hope to see each wrestler return during our Preseason Training Program to make one more push before the regular season begins.
